Aneesah Ali - Design Engineer

We interviewed Aneesah Ali, a recent addition to the Ischebeck Titan Design team, to explore her opinions on the construction industry as a designer, her perspective on inclusion, the advantages and drawbacks of working in the field, and also her advice for women already in or considering joining the industry.

Aneesah's thorough responses to our questions offer valuable insights and thoughtful advice, reflecting her positive outlook on her own career and the future for women in the industry.

How long have you been with Ischebeck Titan?

I joined Ischebeck Titan in April 2023 - so it has been around 10 months.

Did you work in this sector previously?

I have been working in the construction/engineering sector since 2019 shortly after my graduation in the summer of 2018. Although I have been in this sector for about 4-5 years, my previous experience is in ground shoring, so the type of work I am doing here at Ischebeck Titan is relatively new to me!

What is your experience of the construction industry as a woman?

I have had a lot of ups and downs as a woman in the construction industry, in terms of adapting and overcoming personal and environmental challenges- but overall, my experience has been very positive. I have noticed a lot of progressive change in terms of gender diversity since I started working in this sector.

I am grateful that I have had a lot of support from people in this industry, who have encouraged and helped me develop the confidence to continue pursuing my career. They have taught me to be more vocal, ask questions and not shy away from getting involved. My experience has helped me empower other women that I have worked alongside as they join the industry.

How do you feel about working for Ischebeck Titan?

I felt very welcomed here at Ischebeck Titan – within the Oldham office and the wider company as the ‘Impact Day’ left me with a very good impression upon joining. Everyone here is very friendly and approachable, willing to help and teach where and when they can. I believe I can learn a lot working alongside professionals with many years of experience in the industry.

I look forward to seeing how I progress and flourish individually and within the company.

What do you consider are the pros & cons of working in construction?

I think there are a lot of benefits in working within the construction industry. The industry itself is very vast and there are a lot of opportunities here for progression and growth. However, although I have acknowledged the changes the industry has made to diversify over the last few years – I do believe that there is always room for improvement.

What does inclusion mean to you?

When I think of inclusion – I think of a work environment that is made up of a diverse workforce, one that retains and grows diverse talent, which I can see is happening here at Ischebeck Titan. Inclusion to me also means being actively included and valued for the work I do. Working in an environment that is free of bias and has no limitations on progression based on this.

What advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career in construction?

My advice would be to free yourself from the stereotypes and limitations put on you by society. Although this sounds easier said than done, I think a good start would be to build your confidence – you have valuable experience and knowledge that is sought after. I would also encourage you to actively pursue as many opportunities as possible that come your way, it is a chance to learn and stand out. Lastly, I would like to reiterate my comments on empowerment, we as women have a unique opportunity to influence a new generation of workers and we can do this by mentoring and supporting newcomers, creating a positive and progressive industry.

In short - don’t let the fear of striking out stop you playing the game!
