IDeconstruct (UK) Ltd were contracted to carry out a substantial structural alteration package, including the design and installation of all the temporary works, demolition and reinforced concrete works, on a central London development, Mabledon Place.

The project had its complexities, with demolition and construction being carried out on multiple floors, at the same time. One of the most challenging areas of the project was the roof slab on the north annex, which was constructed out of sequence in order to allow the new steel frame construction to advance.

The C305 Eastern Running Tunnels were constructed using a tunnel boring machine, rising to the Portal 300lm east from the Royal Victoria Docklands Light Railway station (fig 1). To the north of the site is a highway with utilities and to the south is the DLR.

Due to the site conditions, ground treatment was required to im prove ground conditions for tunnel construction, increasing the cohesion and stiffness of the granular materials and to reduce their permeability. The aim is to protect third party infrastructure from the effects of construction of the permanent works. This also stabilises the ground above and in front of the TBM, reducing the potential volume loss.

The Parabola building formally known as the Common Wealth Building is an iconic tent like structure that sits on Kensington High Street. The Parabola’s initial construction was bold for 1960 with a hyperbolic paraboloid copper roof. Designs at the time only permitted half of the concrete roof construction to be built with the remaining roof built traditionally. The building has been empty for nearly ten years but an agreement was reached with the Design Museum for a new 100,000 sqft museum in the Exhibition Building as well as 3 new high quality residential apartment buildings which will complement the Exhibition Building. The 62 residential units will comprise 9 x one bedroom, 13 x two bedroom, 28 x three bedroom, 11 x four bedroom and 1 x five bedroom units.
